Hey readers, nowadays, a question often knocks on the door of my mind. Does every job require compromises? Will there always be a dilemma to choose either your personal life or work?

I am sure at some point in life; this might be in your mind too. So let’s address it today.

We all will have dreams of our first job where along with the job we are more happy and excited about other things such as freedom (most important), parties, independence and many more things like that. But in my case, when I started the career, I was placed in a tiny town of Andhra Pradesh, where we had a company campus far away from town. When I went, I saw the place didn’t have beds, and we had to sleep there with mattresses as it was a very recent purchase of the company.

I realized the plans which I made (parties, movies, etc.) were not going to happen here. Initially, things went fine but after 4 - 5 months I started feeling frustrated because I thought my freedom was not existing anymore.

One day, I asked myself what I wanted from this job and when I actually examined myself, I was happy with the work, peers, bosses, and they were happy with my performance. Isn’t this what we want from our job?

Many people are actually struggling to achieve this, which I already had within the span of 4 - 5 months. I asked myself what actually freedom is for me? Is it me going and partying every weekend, or is it me being financially independent, taking my life’s decisions on my own, and supporting my family financially.

I often believe the definition of freedom is wrong in our dictionary. It’s because of the external environment we never ask ourselves what actually space is for us. The meaning of freedom can be different for all based on the life experiences we have. In life, what you give is what you get.

If you give your 100% to your job with integrity, you will definitely get what you deserve. I am the best example of it. Within the span of 7 months, I was announced as Associate Vice President.

Now, I know few people might think that even after giving their 100% integrity, sometimes they don’t get what they deserve. In such situations, ask yourself 3 questions:

  1. Is your 100% enough for the company to grow
  2. Is this really your true potential, or it is just an illusion
  3. Do you add any value to the system?

If the answer is “yes,” you deserve a better place where you are valued, companies need passionate people who can add value to their system. It is not always necessary you are valued everywhere and anywhere.

So, search for a place where you are valued.

You only decide the answer to the question, “does every job requires compromise?” Is it really compromise, or it’s just in our minds.

In the end, I would like to reinforce what Steve Jobs once said,

“Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do.”
